9 Suzhou classical gardens selected as national parks

Suzhou classical gardens are parts of China’s precious cultural heritage.

Chinanews, Suzhou, February 26 �C The Ministry of Construction has
released the names of the first batch of 20 national parks, including 9
Suzhou classical gardens: Zhuozheng Garden, Liu Garden, Wangshi Garden,
Huanxiu Villa, Lion Grove, Yipu Garden, Ou Garden, Tuisi Garden and
Canglang Pavilion.
National parks refer to the famous city parks and gardens. Suzhou
classical gardens are parts of China’s precious cultural heritage (all
the 9 gardens are on the list of World Cultural Heritage) as well as an
indispensable part of the life of Suzhouers, not to mention they are also
world-renowned tourism resorts. In fact, their unique historical and
cultural background serves to contribute to their ranking among national
parks.
The earliest classical gardens in Suzhou can be dated back to the Song
Dynasty (960-1279). However, the gardens impress their visitors not only
with their age-old history but also with their delicate scenes,
particularly Canglang Pavilion, Zhuozheng Garden, Lion Grove and Liu
Garden, the most famous 4 that represent different styles of dynasties of
Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing (960-1911).
In 1978, an imitation of a Suzhou classical garden was set up by Chen
Congzhou (the author of the book Suzhou Classical Gardens) in the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, US, which was the first time ever
to directly introduce Chinese ancient architecture to Westerners.

Zimbabwe will not be represented in any of the team sports at next year’s
Olympic Games after the national women’s hockey side ended the African
Zone qualifying tournament winless in Nairobi, Kenya, at the weekend, The
Herald reported on Tuesday.

The Zimbabwe women’s side found the going tough at the week-long
tournament where they only managed to score one goal and conceded 14 in
four matches against hosts Kenya, Namibia, South Africa and Ghana.

The women’s Olympic Games qualifying tournament was held simultaneously
with the men’s competition in Nairobi.

Zimbabwe were not represented in the men’s qualifiers after the Hockey
Association of Zimbabwe failed to raise enough money to send a team.

The Zimbabwe women’s team were only able to travel to Nairobi after they
received some financial assistance from the Olympic Solidarity through
the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee.

The failure by the team to make the grade at the Nairobi tournament will
leave Zimbabwe without a representative side in any of the team sports
during next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing.

NUERBURGRING, Germany: McLaren’s Fernando Alonso declared the Formula One
title race too close to call after slashing team mate Lewis Hamilton’s
lead to just two points on Sunday.

Spain’s double world champion was the big beneficiary of a wet and
chaotic European Grand Prix that left 22-year-old British rookie Hamilton
and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen empty handed.

Hamilton has 70 points, Alonso 68, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa 59 and
Raikkonen 52.

Alonso and Raikkonen, who started on pole position on Sunday, have now
won three races each while Hamilton and Massa have two victories apiece.

“In the next seven races I would not put any money on any driver. Anyone
can win because the races are a bit unpredictable,” said Alonso, who
celebrates his 26th birthday before the next race in Hungary.

Hamilton, who seemed to attract a season’s worth of bad luck in just one
race, said he had learnt more in one nightmare afternoon at the
Nuerburgring than from his nine successive podium finishes before that.

He pointed out also that, despite everything going wrong for him
including one of the heaviest crashes of his career in Saturday’s
qualifying, he was still in front.

“With seven races left there’s still a long way to go,” he told reporters.

“I still feel quite positive going into the next race. I’m still leading
the world championship, which I find quite amusing considering it was
such a bad weekend.”

“It just shows how hard everyone else is having to push to catch me up.”

Even if he managed to emerge still smiling, the momentum is now with his
teammate in what is an even tighter four-way battle for the crown.

That, at least, is how it looks at present. By Thursday afternoon, thanks
to events far removed from the racetrack, the situation may be different.

All eyes are now on Paris, and a hearing of the governing International
Automobile Federation (FIA)’s world motor sport council into a spying
controversy involving McLaren and Ferrari.

McLaren, who have suspended chief designer Mike Coughlan, are accused of
unauthorised possession of Ferrari technical information that was
allegedly found in the Briton’s home.

If found guilty of fraudulent conduct, the penalties could undermine
everything that Alonso, Hamilton and the team have achieved so far this
year with talk of points deductions and even race bans.

McLaren, who stretched their lead over Ferrari from 25 to 27 points, say
there is nothing on their car that can be traced to Ferrari.

But they are still being made to sweat.

“Whilst it would be wrong to say I look forward to Thursday, because I’m
not particularly looking forward to it, nevertheless I am keen to get
into the process of putting this behind us,” team boss Ron Dennis said.

“We have sent a full dossier into the FIA, and the FIA is going through a
process, and after that if there are any unanswered questions then we
will answer them.”

The construction site in the western suburbs of Chengdu, in Sichuan
Province, looked much like any other. It all started when a bulldozer
driver heard a scraping sound as his machine bit deep into the ground: he
struck a collection of golden, jade and bronze objects. Workers and
passersby snapped up the treasures and scurrying off. Those too late to
get anything, disgruntled, report the find to the police. And that’’s
how, in February 2001, the world learned about the relics of a mysterious
3,000-year-old Jinsha kingdom in the mountains of southwest China.

“Jinsha culture is unique, quite different from cultures in other parts
of China, but is scarcely mentioned by Chinese historians,” said Zhu
Zhangyi, a veteran archaeologist in Sichuan and deputy-curator of the
Jinsha Museum. “The harsh geography made it difficult for outsiders to
enter the kingdom and so it was able to preserve its endemic culture.”

Police have been able to recover most of the relics purloined from the
construction site — about 100 items in all, but no one can confidently
claim that they have recovered everything.

In the past six years, the site has yielded up about 6,000 gold, jade,
bronze and stone artifacts, tens of thousands of pottery items and also
hundreds of elephant tusks. Gold fever

Jinsha means ”gold sand”. True to its name, the site has proved
extraordinarily rich in gold relics.

“Chinese people typically use gold as jewellery — earrings, bracelets or
necklaces — but Jinsha people used gold for sacrificial purposes. They
made gold masks, gold headware and strange, horn-shaped objects in finely
worked gold,” said Sun Hua, an archaeologist from Beijing University.

The report said it found the van in the accident was equipped with tires
of two different sizes, three Chinese tires and one Michelin tire.

The real cause of the fatal accident was the misuse of the tires, said
Shen Jinrong, the board chairman of Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd.

The administration said it re-organized the sample testing of the Zhongce
U.S.-exported tires and found the items fully met the requirements of the
U.S. safety standards.

Japanese reports in May claimed that Chinese-made ceramic cooking pots
were detected to contain excessive lead. However, tests done by three
Japanese inspection organizations showed that the lead contained was 1.3
mg/L, well below the 2.5 mg/L requirement in Japanese laws and
regulations on food and sanitation, according to the administration’’s
statement.

In response to the latest claims from the Philippines that the Chinese
“White Rabbit” candy was tainted with formaldehyde, Li said the candy
maker had not used formaldehyde in the production of its creamy candy
according to their investigations and testing.

Formaldehyde, a known cancer causing agent, can be used as a preservative
or disinfectant.

Li said the administration had received no official information
concerning the issue from the Philippine government, and its Embassy to
China said relevant information was unavailable when the administration
contacted the embassy.

The administration discovered that related enterprises did use drugs
unapproved for use in the United States in their aquatic exports to the
United States, and it also found that some of the enterprises were not
lawfully registered food exporters, said Li.

China and the United States will hold a meeting in Beijing to discuss the
detention of four kinds of China’’s seafood exports by the United States
between July 31 and August 4.

The two countries will hold a vice-ministerial-level talk on food safety
in August.

Uganda has dropped eight rungs to 99th in the latest FIFA World rankings
released by the world football governing body this week.

The setback of the East African country’s national team comes after their
0-0 draw with Lesotho in the African Nations Cup qualifiers played on
June 19 in Maseru. However, Lesotho improved by three places to 145th
after the draw.

Uganda rose to 91st after beating West African giants Nigeria 2-1 in June
jumping three places from their previous status. Nigeria is ranked 25th,
up seven places from their previous ranking.

Uganda entered the FIFA rankings in August 1993 at 104th but its
unpredictable fluctuations over the last 14 years place it 101st on
average.

Cranes’ best ever ranking was 66th in April 1995 and its all-time low was
121st in July 2002.

Li said recent Japanese reports claimed that Chinese-made boilers
contained excessive lead. However, tests done by three Japanese
inspection organizations showed that the lead contained in Chinese
boilers was only about half of that in Japanese ones.

Li continued to say that the Chinese government has always attached great
importance to quality control of products, especially food products and
have worked hard to ensure food safety.

He said the record shows that between 2004 and 2006, 99 or more than 99
percent of Chinese exports to the U.S. were up to the quality standard,
which is the same or even better than the U.S. exports to China, and
Chinese exports to Japan and the European Union enjoyed even higher
record.

“It’’s unreasonable to think that Chinese products have become unsafe
overnight, as China has been importing goods to the U.S. and other
countries for quite a long time,” said Li.

However, he also acknowledged that there were problems in the country’’s
food safety, and some enterprises, small ones in particular, were found
to have used food additives or non-food materials.

Food safety problems actually exist in many countries, and we need more
cooperation from other countries to improve the food safety, Li said.

China and the United States will hold a consultation in Beijing on
China’s sea food exports detained by the U.S. and the set-up of a
collaboration mechanism on food safety, a senior Chinese quality control
official said on Wednesday.

The five-day consultation between Chinese food safety authorities and the
Food and Drug Administration of the United States is scheduled to start
on July 31, said Li Yuanping, an official in charge of the safety of
import and export products at the General Administration of Quality
Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
